Mumbai's diptychs / Diptyques de Mumbai

Mumbai, India. November 2017.

Arrived there with a lot of images in mind, all my assumptions were increased tenfold by the density of population. 18 million people, even for an inhabitant of a big city like Paris, it's a slap in the face. The urban activity is very heavy, people everywhere, non-stopping noise, heat and smells sometimes nauseating, it is destabilizing at first, then little by little, we get used to it, we have no choice.

In spite of this incessant swarm, the Mumbaikars are open and welcoming. Proud of their roots, their history, their country. The cameras do not bother them, on the contrary, they are willing to be photographed or especially to have their neighborphotographed. That does not fail to make them laugh.

In a documentary style, I wanted to highlight some of the men and women I met during my exploration of the city. But a portrait alone was not enough for me to transcribe even a tiny part of what Mumbai is. The result is a combination of diptych photographs to put my subjects back into their urban environment.

Arrivé là-bas avec beaucoup d'images en tête, toutes mes présomptions se sont retrouvées décuplées par la densité de population. 18 millions d'habitants, même pour un habitant d'une grande ville comme Paris, c'est une sacrée claque ! L'activité urbain est très dense, des gens partout, du bruit en permanence, la chaleur et des odeurs parfois nauséabondes. C'est déstabilisant au départ, puis petit à petit, on s'y fait. On n'a pas le choix.

Malgré ce fourmillement incessant, les Mumbaikars sont ouverts et accueillants. Fiers de leurs racines, de leur histoire, de leur pays. Les appareils photos ne les dérangent pas, bien au contraire, ils sont demandeurs pour être photographiés ou surtout pour que l'on photographie le voisin. Ce qui ne manque pas de les amuser.

Dans un style documentaire, j'ai voulu mettre en avant quelques hommes et femmes croisés lors de mon exploration de la ville. Mais un portrait seul ne suffisait pas à retranscrire ne serait-ce qu'une infime partie de ce qu'est Mumbai. En découle cette association en diptyques afin de replacer mes sujets dans leur environnement urbain.
